Lynchburg, VA - This time of year lights are all around us some even cover people's homes. But, the lights you can use inside your home are changing. They are becoming more high-tech and energy efficient.
The three basic bulbs are the old-fashioned incandescent, the newer compact fluorescents, and the newest is the LED light bulb.
Just through the front doors and down aisle 2, and there James Tinsley will fit you with a light bulb.
"For me the compact fluorescent. Really it just depends on the person," said Tinsley, electrical department manager.
And there will always be an option. There seem to be as many as there are shoppers to buy them. You have your classic incandescent, the curly CFL, which is Tinsley's favorite:
"I saved about $70 a month on my electric bill," said Tinsley.
But the hottest bulb on the block is the LED.
"Cool to the touch. Bright light. That's what LED will do," said Tinsley.
The next best thing, a CFL that gives you 20,000 hours, and the incandescent gives 2,000 hours. Use a bulb 2 hours a day at the average hourly utility rate, one LED will cost $1 per year. But, an incandescent is much higher. That will cost $5 per year. That really adds up.
But, lighting also sets a mood, and LEDs have a certain style.
"They have that nice blue look. It's not like the white, white lights. Yeah, I like them," said Delexis Brown.
"Do you like the light they give off?" we asked Bobby Miller, who bought LED Lights, but only put them in his basement.
"I don't care for them upstairs," said Miller.
They might be pretty, but some say pretty expensive too.
The LEDs run probably between $20 and $45.
"They might be pretty, but $40? No," said Brown."
Of course, your savings depend on how often you use them. One man bought LED bulbs for his basement, and didn't notice a significant drop in his electric bill.
