Holiday light show rocks motorists' space

David Stokes just wants to light up your life this holiday season.

Without too much racket.

The husband and father of two kids, with another on the way, has been wowing passersby this holiday season with his impressive display of 12,000 dancing LED lights choreographed to four popular Christmas songs at his Coventry Rd. N.E. house.

But rather than using speakers for his light show, Stokes plays the music from a computer through a low powered FM transmitter that passing cars can tune into via their radio.

Pedestrians can also appreciate the performance by pushing a button on a radio box outside the home.

He said he decided to illuminate his home to carry on a tradition he grew up with in Cranbrook.

“To me, growing up in a small town, what we did as a family was check out the lights,” he said.

“I just started small and every year I doubled it.”

He began working on the display early in the year and said it took between eight and 16 hours per song to set up.

But it’s all been worth it, attracting high volumes of traffic to his home.

“My neighbour laughed at me — I had two tour buses in front of my house,” he said with a chuckle.

Stokes set up the lightenupcalgary.com website, informing Calgarians of the city’s best Christmas lights to check out.

His light show runs from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. until New Year’s Eve.
