The city will deploy the LED lighting systems as part of its green initiative introduced in February 2009 by Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson to become the greenest city in the world by 2020.
Vancouver City has selected the Holophane Washington Postlite LED luminaires based on rigorous and constant performance measures. The neighborhood to be retrofitted is susceptible to issues about keeping dark night skies and the Holophane’s full cutoff optics is designed to offer the stringent light management needed.
The LED luminaires’ ultra-output LEDs and accurate optical system offer maximum illumination output to optimize pole spacing, while sustaining even illumination. This enables the city to install the luminaire farther apart. The LED technology is sustainable and reduces life-cycle costs.
The durability of the Washington Postlite lighting systems and LED light output are maximized using an enhanced thermal management system. The systems has a heat sink that is fixed into the lighting system to dissipate the heat away from the vital LED parts. A specially designed housing makes it easy to deploy and maintain the LED luminaires.
Vancouver City will deploy the LED luminaires across roadway measuring several thousand linear feet. The city will fix the Holophane lighting systems on regular 16-foot concrete poles, substituting the steel poles deployed in 1946. The LED luminaires will be installed under the tree canopy as the area is surrounded by large number of trees. The project is scheduled for completion in spring 2011.
