On Tuesday, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has announced updated standards for light fixtures to qualify for the Energy Star label.

According to EPA, effective Oct. 1, to receive Energy Star endorsement, light fixtures will need to increase efficiency 30 percent above currently qualified fluorescent-based fixtures.

In addition, the requirement will rise to 40 percent greater efficiency than current Energy Star lighting in 2013.

The EPA noted that consumers wishing to buy lighting approved by Energy Star will have a range of technology options, including fluorescent and LED lighting.
