PennWell Corporation, the parent company of LEDs Magazine and Strategies Unlimited market research firm, has revealed the line-up of speakers for the 13th-annual Strategies in Light (SIL) confererence and exhibition. To take place on February 7-9, 2012 at the Santa Clara Convention Center in Santa Clara, California, SIL is a business-oriented event designed to help LED and lighting professionals make sense of these increasingly dynamic markets.
The HB-LED industry is currently undergoing dramatic changes in both industry business models and application areas. Following an astounding 108% market growth in 2010, driven largely by the adoption of LED backlights in LCD TVs, the 2011 market is expected to grow at a much slower rate of 10% according the Strategies Unlimited. Demand for LCD TVs and computer monitors has slowed and the oversupply of LEDs has reduced prices drastically. Nevertheless, the LED market is forecast to grow another 45% by 2014 to $16.2 billion, driven by recovery in the backlight market and increasing adoption of LED lighting.
As has been the case in past years, the focus for Strategies in Light 2012 will be on the latest developments in HB-LED applications, technology and manufacturing. For the fourth year in a row the conference will feature a parallel LEDs in Lighting Track, which will examine some of the most pressing issues regarding the adoption of LED lighting in different applications.
Featured speakers for the LEDs in Lighting Track include: Ted Ferreira, Principal, CD+M Lighting Design Group; and Dave Ranieri, VP and General Manager, Commercial Indoor Business Unit, Lithonia Lighting. Vrinda Bhandarkar, Senior Market Research Analyst at Strategies Unlimited, will summarize the results of the company’s latest research on LED luminaire and replacement lamp market trends. Other participating companies and organizations include: Nualight, Type A Productions, JW Marriott, Pacific Northwest National Laboratories, PG&E, Northeast Energy Efficiency Partnership, Electrical Contractor Magazine, Lighting Research Center, Xicato, Cree, San Jose Department of Transportation, and Redwood Systems.
Featured speakers for the conference’s HB LED Market Track will include: Ling Wu, General Secretary of the China Solid-State Lighting Alliance; Chung Hoon Lee, CEO of Seoul Semiconductor Co.; and Eric Kim, CEO of Soraa. In addition, Ella Shum, Director of the LED Research, Strategies Unlimited, will provide an annual update on the market for HB LEDs, along with a five-year forecast.
Other companies and organizations contributing to the HB LED Market Track include: d.light, LEDs Magazine, QD Vision, LIghtscape Materials, Philips Lighting, DisplaySearch, Lumileds, China LED Display Association, Cree, Osram Opto Semiconductors, Nichia America, Canaccord Genuity, SSLS, Inc., Mentor Graphics, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, TerraLUX, and Texas Instruments.
New this year is a full parallel track on LED manufacturing. As the HB-LED industry scales to higher levels of volume production, manufacturing productivity and yield are more important than ever. The LED manufacturing track, sponsored by SEMI, will explore the challenges associated with moving to larger substrate sizes, increasing automation and improving yield.
Featured speakers for the LED Manufacturing Track include: Iain Black, Vice President of Worldwide Manufacturing, Engineering and Innovation, Philips Lumileds Lightng; Tom Morrow, Executive Vice President, Emerging Markets, SEMI; and Jacob Tarn, President, TSMC – Solid-State Lighting. Other participating companies and organizations include: DOE Solid-State Lighting Program, Rubicon Technology, Plasma-Therm, EV Group, Rudolph Technologies, Labsphere, Everlight Electronics, Cookson Electronics and Dow Corning.
SIL will also continue the tradition of offering a full-day Solid-State Lighting Investor Forum on February 7, featuring presentations by a range of advanced technology startups.
In addition to the conference programs, Strategies in Light 2012 will include an exhibit area with more than 150 companies. A separate LED Light and Design Pavilion will showcase LED lighting products while providing presentations and hands-on demonstrations on February 8 and 9. Five in-depth workshops and two tutorials will be held on Wednesday, February 7, covering topics ranging from LED test and measurement to architectural lighting design.
Last year, Strategies in Light welcomed participants from North America, Latin America, Europe, the Middle East, Asia, Africa, and Australia. LED Japan Conference & Expo/Strategies in Light, which was recently held in Yokohama, Japan, drew more than 5,200 attendees.
