Some most famous bridges in London are to retain the Olympic architectural lighting scheme following a detailed evaluation of costs.
Brand experience company Innovision originally commissioned lighting designer Paul Cook and a handful of experts from the electrical, lighting and design industries to illuminate the six bridges that run either side of Hungerford Bridge.
London, Southwark, Millennium, Blackfriars and Waterloo Bridge, plus the Golden Jubilee footbridge, were all studied carefully before a tailor-made design was employed for each bridge.
Lighting solutions company Architainment supplied a range of Color Kinetic LEDs and provided technical support and wifi for all the bridges. The arches of Waterloo Bridge were illuminated by four ColorReach and two ColorBlast LED fittings on each of the four piers and the suspension wires and arms of the Golden Jubilee footbridges were fitted with Philips Color Kinetics ColorBurst fixtures. London Bridge was fitted with 36 Philips Color Kinetics ColorBlast 12 Powercore XRE fittings.
Pharos LPC lighting controllers were installed by Pharos technicians, while PRG supplied the rental equipment and customised some of the fixtures against weather damage. Proctor and Co Ltd were appointed by main contractor FM Conway as the electrical contractor for all light fittings, power and data cables.
Mr Cook explained, “Although proposed as a temporary project, a closer look at the costs showed that some of the work required could be permanent and so provide a great legacy for this section of the Thames.”
