angdong Province once again launched analysis and early warning of LED packaging patent and MOCVD equipment patent in Zhongshan following the previous one back in this July.
Fan Guanghan, the professor of Institute of Optoelectronic material and technology of South China Normal University, gave a report that in the space of LED packaging, China leads other countries in the number of original patent applications, followed by Japan, the US and Korea. In foreign countries, R&
D
of LED packaging does not focus on only structure, but also packaging materials. Relatively, China mainly focuses on the design of LED packaging structure, therefore, it is easily subject to others in pursuit of better materials.
In addition, overseas, quality is the highlight in parent application for packaging process and structure. Once there is a high quality patent, foreign peers will apply for patent family in other countries via PCT or other channels and China is their main target market. The widespread imitation of Philips Lumileds’
p
atented structure in China can approve that despite a large quantity of patent applications in the field of packaging structure, China has not embraced enough confidence on its patent quality that will influence the world.
The global top 10 such as Phillips, Samsung, Cree, LG and Panasonic have applied for 5,263 patens totally and they will remain as main competitors within packaging side in the future. When it comes to Chinese applicants, the leading three include Taiwan Everlight Electronics, HarvatekTechnologyCo.,Ltd and I-Chiun Precision Industry Co.,Ltd, accounting for 18%, 13% and 11% respectively of total applications filed by Chinese top 10. This indicates that Taiwan enjoys great capability in the field of packaging and Taiwanese LED peers will remain forceful competitors. Mainland top six patent applicants include Heshan Lide, Foshan NationStar, Tsinghua, University of Electronic Science and Technology of China, Guangzhou Nanker Integrated Electronic Co., Ltd. and Irico Group.
The report also shows that on MOCVD side, seen from application trend of the main five countries and regions- the US, Japan, Korea, Germany and Taiwan, the former two started earlier and the latter three started to apply in the middle 90s of the last century. With some being early applicants, these 5 countries and regions have uniform situation in patents, with applications growing fast.
China lags behind in this area, with limited numbers of patent and lack of originality and quality. German AIXTRON and the US VEECO have advantages in technology and enjoy 90% of the global market. Their core patents cover design of growth reaction chamber, heating, design of objective table and so on, which, as core technological points of MOCVD equipment, have gained official approval across the world.
