In the case of a stagnant market, strength enhancement is considered more important.” Wang Wei, deputy sales manager of Zhejiang Orient Crystal Optics Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as Orient Crystal Optics, 002199.SZ) said the company has been devoted to sapphire crystal growth and substrate processing.

Currently, with adoption of imported high-end kyropoulos equipment, Orient Crystal Optics has the capability of mass production of high quality sapphire crystals in weight of 30 kg and 60kg. After back-end process of slicing, grinding and polishing, these sapphire crystals can deliver 2-inch and 4-inch sapphire substrates.

Current sales condition shows that 2-inch substrates contribute to the largest portion of sales of the company. With the widespread use of 4-inch substrates, current sales structure may be changed.” Wang Wei said Orient Crystal Optics now also keeps close track of the market demand of 6-inch sapphire substrates and is ready to introduce 85kg sapphire growth furnace to launch mass-production of 6-inch sapphire substrates.

Meanwhile, Wang Wei revealed that the company will spare no pains in making breakthrough in evenness, warping degree and other technical index to match the requirement of PSS process and will improve quality control and cost management to be better able to meet the market demand.

Back in May this year, Orient Crystal Optics announced that its board of directors had approved to set a joint venture in Jinhua, Zhejiang Province together with foreign shareholder CTLab, a Korean company. This joint venture was said to be funded by a total investment of $8 million and have registered capital of $8 million. CTLab invested $8,000 thousand worth of its proprietary technology of LED patterned sapphire substrates, accounting for 10% of registered capital.

The joint venture will be dedicated to creating a manufacturing base and R&D center for high quality and high efficacy PSS. It will produce high quality products with advanced technology and management method to improve market competitiveness and achieve good economic benefits.

Currently, in addition to sapphire substrates, Orient Crystal Optics has also developed LED luminaire portfolio including global bulbs, underwater lights, street lights, downlights, ceiling lights, track lights, spotlights, candle lamps, etc. which have hit the market already.
