Toshiba Lighting & Technology Corporation (Toshiba) announced that it is acquiring GreenStar Products, Inc., a manufacturer of LED luminaires for roadway, area and canopy lighting applications. GreenStar’s LED luminaires are direct replacements for conventional HID lighting, such as high-pressure sodium or metal halide, which requires frequent maintenance and high wattage usage.
In February 2012, Toshiba International Corporation entered into an agreement with San Antonio, Texas-based GreenStar to produce the LED luminaires. Since then Toshiba has been marketing, selling and distributing the GreenStar products within the United States, Canada and the Caribbean. Toshiba Lighting & Technology Corporation is coordinating with Toshiba International Corporation to manage the relationship with GreenStar and will continue selling its products in North America.
GreenStar’s product designs include photometric controls that are said to deliver superior light distribution and greater uniformity than conventional high intensity discharge (HID) lighting. Additionally, GreenStar’s roadway product includes a built-in photocell, which serves as one of the photometric controls and has a rated life that exceeds the life of a conventional NEMA twist lock photocell by as much as three times.
Mr. Honeycutt stated, “This acquisition allows us to supply a variety of markets from commercial and industrial to governmental and institutional in North America and beyond, with innovative, reliable products that create real value.”
Toshiba noted that one hundred percent of its current lighting product offering and product development in the U.S. is based on LED technology.
