Cost of LED Lighting is Expected to be Reduced with Subsidy from DOE

United States Department of Energy (DOE) released the latest report that the installs of LED lamps in United States increased 10-fold in the past two years from 4.5 million units in 2010 to 49 million units in 2012, it is estimated that annual savings in energy costs is about US $ 675 million. By 2030, LED lighting is expected to account for 75% of the total lighting sales, and the saved energy is available for 26 million American families.

Ernest Moniz, Energy Minister, recently announced that the Department of Energy will subsidize five manufacturing research and development projects to support efficient lighting products.

Now, luminous efficiency of LED lighting products is 6-7 times more than that of traditional lighting, up to a maximum of 25 times. DOE plans to invest 10 million U.S. dollars to support the research and development activities of the relevant enterprises. Moniz said that efficient Lighting can save more energy for consumers and create more employment opportunities through funding the relevant research and development activities of this industry. This is the win-win effect the research and development of energy efficiency brings for economy.

Although the cost of replacement cycle is very attractive, but because the installation costs of LED and OLED lighting in initial stage is very high, DOE hopes to significantly reduce the costs through funding when the lighting quality and performance could be well ensured.
